Smith was inspired to paint this large landscape after a visite to the mouth of the Kenai River in Alaska, To him, it's what you can't see in this painting that was so compelling. Due to thick fog, you are unable to see mountains or any background passed the Cannery, It was as if it was an island in a cloud.
